emdr therapy

Imagine experiencing something unpleasant. You may find yourself thinking about it all day, feeling unsettled. After a few days, you might be able to look back on the incident without being affected by it anymore. You have processed it. Unfortunately, some experiences are so distressing that they cannot be processed through your own strength. Even the mere thought of the traumatic experience(s) can overwhelm you completely, time and time again. In such cases, EMDR can offer relief.

emdr, when processing on your own is not possible

Fortunately, most difficult experiences in life can be processed and given a place. Sometimes, however, an event or period in your life has been so intense that you simply cannot break free from it. You may have experienced (sexual) abuse, a traffic accident, violence, or something else that was deeply distressing — and still is. A situation, thought or emotion can suddenly bring the entire experience back into the present moment with the same intensity as before. This can have far‑reaching consequences for your wellbeing, your relationship, and your social functioning. EMDR, an effective form of psychotherapy for trauma processing, can help you.

Are you unable to let go of painful experiences? Do you still suffer from what happened back then? With EMDR, you can increasingly look back on the past without the intense emotions you may still feel now.

EMDR therapy is an effective method for processing trauma by reducing the emotional intensity of the images, thoughts or feelings that keep resurfacing. This allows you to experience them without being overwhelmed. You can look at them freely, stay present, and let them go. They no longer have to determine the quality of your life.

intake session emdr therapy

During the intake session, we get to know each other. I invite you to talk about your symptoms and the goal of the therapy — your request for help. If EMDR therapy may be beneficial for you, I will explain how the brain is thought to work during EMDR and outline the EMDR protocol. I will also check whether there are any contraindications for EMDR therapy.

If time allows, we will identify together which traumatic experiences are so intense for you that they qualify for EMDR treatment. If there is not enough time, we will schedule a follow‑up session to prepare the first treatment carefully. The first EMDR session will then take place during the next appointment after the preparatory session. Depending on how the intake unfolds, the first EMDR treatment may take place during your second visit or the session following the preparatory appointment. A thorough preparation is essential for the effectiveness of the EMDR process.

an emdr treatment

An EMDR treatment generally consists of three steps:

I am affiliated with Samenwerkende EMDR-therapeuten Nederland , a cooperative network for EMDR therapists. This professional association requires me to undertake annual training in EMDR therapy. This ensures that I can guide you optimally in reducing the emotional burden you still experience, so that you can continue your life in the way you wish.
